How did you become interested in being a public servant?
I started my career in the private sector (banking) and was introduced to the world of the public sector and public service as an employee of a new state agency called The Texas Department of Commerce. This allowed me to utilize private sector experience within the public sector to create positive economic development impacts at the local and state level.
What is your professional background?
I have experience in both the private and public sector and the workforce and economic development space.
How did you first get involved with the NFBPA?
I was invited to several NFBPA events that were being held by the local chapter here in Central Texas (Austin). I quickly started the process of becoming a member after attending/participating in the events.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I am not sure there are typical days😊…however a day could consist of scheduled briefing from various departments within the agency, meetings with office staff, meeting with stakeholder organizations, scheduled conference calls, preparation for Commissioner and Docket meetings, actual Commissioner and Docket meetings, and scheduled presentations/remarks/check signings to and for organizations.
What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the Public Administration profession?
The ability to keep pace with the increasing demands and expectations at the city, county, state and federal levels.
What are you looking forward to most in the next 5 to 10 years?
I am looking forward to seeing and enjoying the progress that has been made as a result of the efforts invested 5 to 10 to 15 years ago.
What is the most rewarding thing about your work?
The ability to truly make a difference in the lives of others in so many ways
What do you do when you're not working?
I am a runner so….running, some form of physical exercising, movies (I love old classics), reading and eating out on Saturday and Sunday.
What's your favorite tip for someone in the industry?
Work hard and smart (includes properly networking) and make sure it’s something you enjoy doing.
